Commander Promoted.

Five months into his term as commander of the Corvis watch, Commander Helstrom has been promoted and moved to work directly with his highness Duke Ebonhart the Third, he will be greatly missed as the city struggles to attain peace.
.

Last wild undead “down”

The last of the roving undead created by the creation of the Witchfire have been hunted down and put back to rest, however a number of “allied” dead remain at large and protected by their liege lords.

.

Mayor Velanois Bans Khadorian Imports…again

For the third time in 6 months Mayor Velanois has ruled against the lightening of the Khadorian import ban. The Khadorian merchant faction represented by Mr Demetris appealed against the ban, but were turned down.

.

Street Battle leaves 12 Dead.

A night time fight between unknown factions left 12 bodies on the street in one of the largest blood baths in recent weeks, While none of the bodies showed any direct gang signs, a number showed the plague like sores of the newer Quaska thieves guild that appears to be making moves to oust the weakened Sweet Lord and his allied factions.

.

Con Artist Strikes Again

Yet another of Corvis’ “new” rich has been hit by the cities ever elusive master con artist. This time it is rumoured he made off with some 400 bottles of Llaelese wine. The elusive “Limus Elmire”, or so it is said he is called, has managed to avoid all attempts to catch him, including the offer of a 50,000 Crown reward.

.

Shek Macra Moves in

Yet to be confirmed but it is said that Shek Macra has moved into Corvis. Said to be one of the most powerful mages in the region, no one is quite sure why he’d want to be in Corvis. His actual whereabouts are unknown but his well known man servant Blind Boura has been seen, or rather, noticed around town.

.

Cathedral To Open

The new cathedral of Morrow will open shortly to great fanfare , Father Dumas will be holding a special mass which he hopes will bring a new peace to Corvis.

.

Dwarf Slaying Continues

It seems the continuing religious persecution of Cyriss followers continues in spite of promises by the Dwarf community that they will be halted. The latest body was found after it had been “Jacked” and left with the symbol of Cyriss melted into the bodies chest.

.

Viloss Denies Wrong Doing

While the body count keeps rising, Exemplar Viloss continues to continues to stalk the streets at night and is never seen far from the increasing nightly body count. Viloss claims he is out “calming souls” and “curing the sick” , however the new watch commander has apparently demanded that he present himself to the watch to discuss his actions further.

Things started well for the party as they delved into the sunken chapel, First Kovul slipped and plummeted 30′, and 3 minutes later Solomn joing him with a 40′ fall… after seeing the fun, Pytor elected to take off his armor first before heading down the rope.

.

Once safely down in the dark damp chapel the party began to explore the small area. Entering the main sanctuary they were disturbed to find the body of a prelate slumped over the altar, dead hundreds of years but fresh bood still pooling at his feet, and the stone relief carved into the wall of the chapel, split in half by a shift in the Earth that led to water dripping from a crack behind the eyes of Morrow, making him appear to be crying. Searching the dead prelate , a tarnished holy symbol in the corpses hand didn’t tempt any of the party to take it. Though they did bag the bodies scepter of office.

.

Milskrat manged to find the concealed hole in the floor and was plucked from a plummet into newly discovered flooded lower level of the chapel.

.

At this time the haggled figure of Renfrow made himself known, claiming to have been trapped in the chapel for 10…15…20 years, living off errm fish. The more the party talked to him the less they started to trust him, and his imaginery friend Cappus, until Kovul (with an apptitude born of beating the crap out of people who are unaware) took a swipe at the back of Renfrows head with his fist, a love tap it may have been, but combat broke out and before Renfrow could make good his escape he took an axe to the back of his head. Not enough to floor him though and he scrambled and tumbled out of the sanctuary.

.

The party gave chase and ran into Cappus, a ghastly howl sent everyone but Kovul running in fear, and Kovul soon decided to join them, being on his own against some form of incorporeal creature didn’t appeal to his sense of “self perservation”.

.

And so a game of cat and mouse began between Cappus, Renfrow and the party as they scrambled the chapel trying to catch each other. Renfrow thought he had Solumn cold, fired his gun missed horribly and then got nailed by a Hold Person from Kovul. Next round he suffered an axe to the head and that was end of his fish eating days.

.

Cappus though proved to be a far harder target to track down, never mind hit, materiliazing to ambush the party, flooding the area with Darkness and using his howl (to gradual lesser effect) he managed to avoid being nailed too badly though Kovul did give him one “kinda” solid whack.

.

In a moment of inspiration Solomn told Gob to hold up the tarnished holy symbol (still attached to the dead priests arm) and he put a bullet through it, yes the curse was lifted, the creature bannished… no, but it was an interesting idea. A while later Cappus stopped appearing and the party were left undisturbed for long enough for them to pluck up enough courage to search the rest of the top level of the chapel. In doing so they dug up some interesting religous artifacts and Renfrow’s collection of “fish”!

After recovering the old book from Lord Sunbright’s Estate, the party found the location of where the old church is suspected to be, and pieced together the information that leads them to believe that the old chruch has sunk to become part of the under city, and in particular, located some where with the Griffon’s base is located.

.

With the Sweet Lords power very much limited during this time of occupation, that party were left up to their own devices and opted for a straight forward “We’re here to gamble approach”, flashing their cash the party were allowed easy entry to the lift that lowered them down to the main undercity.

.

Once there they handed over the majority of their weaponry, and a quick body search relieved Solomn of several items he had “forgotten”, Zanna insisted on a woman to frisk her and the inexperienced Griffon called in to do the job overlooked Zanna’s hidden stilleto. And so they entered into the Griffon’s den.

.

Spending some time to search the area they found it to be heavily inhabited with a mix of Griffon gang members and a cross section of town’s folk a member of the church of Morrow and what appeared to be a Thamarite priest working openly in the fighting arena. Gob entered the fighting ring to strutt his stuff and after a short delay, “Sniffer Williams” was dug up and thrown in against him. Sniffer has never won a fight in the arena and he didn’t start against Gob. In a fight that saw more misses than hits, Gob managed to nail Sniffer just before crowd grew bored enough to beat them both senseless.

.

A visit to the brothel turned up some stories that lead the party to believe that the old church was located in a less inhabited area where debtors are disposed of, and as they emerged from the brothel they were stopped by a number of armed Griffon’s and invited to join Captain Selar for a chat.

.

The discussion seemed to be heading for a bad ending when she asked the party what they knew about the death of Mad Malick, Gob happily pitched in that he knew all about it and the death of said mad man, and went horribly quiet when he remembered that Malick was a Griffon Captain. Nervous looks were exchanged and Selar stretched out the nervous tention just long enough for Gob to think it was all over before thanking the party for killing off her main rival, rewarding them with 100 Cygnarian Towers (1000 gp).

.

Solomn then decided to push his luck and told Selar what they were doing and what they were lookin for. A brief discussion led to Selar agreeing to grant the party the right to take their weapons into the church, to keep what they find and assistance in getting the Hammer out. As well as the right to make the church into their own base if they clean it out, though 20% salvage tax will be payable.

.

So the part recovered their weapons, sent word to Kovul and Milskrat and ready themselves to descend into the church!

The party had little trouble entering Corvis, passing several check points where they had the rest of their weapons confiscated for being smart arses, but otherwise entered unmolested and were surprised to find the city both quiet and peaceful. No beggars on the streets, no street corner riff raff and none of the Sweet Lords crews to be seen. The peacefulness was rather disturbing. A quick treck to the Church found them looking down the barrel of Cpt Helstrom’s pistol and (much to my amusement) the party thought he’d switched sides, when he put a bullet in the back of the head of the Inquisitor that was with him. The party took more than a few seconds to wonder what exactly had happened. But then as they checked for bullet holes they realized it was just the Inquisitor that had been shot.

.

Helstrom brought the party up to speed and told them he’d be back in 24 hours with details on how to rescue Father Dumas from the dungeon where he was being held, as well as with some weapons. In the time between the party managed to find time for :

Gob to nip out and try and get into the Temple of Cyriss, but the doors were locked

A trip to the Sweet Lords ship, where it was really quiet and the Sweet Lord tasked the party with helping to get the city back on it’s knees – to him. As well as try and rescure Lord Sunbright.

A misguided but successful quest placed upon the party by their dear friend Harcourt Horkel, Milskrat found him to be a great guy, Kovul for some reason wanted to kill him on sight…hmmm

And from helping Harcourt the party ended up running into the Blighted Dwarves that the party had evaded in the forest, killing themand Kovul took the lead Dwarves Axe “Brain Frost”, a covenant weapon.

And then back to the main plot, the party picked up their weapons rowed out to the dungeon sewer entrance and moved swiftly to enter. Finally they arrived at the stairs up into the Dungeon. First up was Bart (The Gobber) , he popped up from the trap door to find himself face to face with a guard using the privy. Bart (covered in mud and gunk) quickly explained that he was cleaning the sewer, which the guard found to be a pretty reasonable statment. Gob followed (another Gobber covered in gunk), “part of the same team”. Okay passable, next up Milskrat armed with Large Hammer “Err… sewer cleaning crew?” more a question than a statement from the Trollkin. Now being caught on the crapper with his pants down the guard knew better than to argue, next up, Kovul,”Part of the…yea well what ever!” An argument now broke out amongst the sewer cleaning crew as to what to do with the man on the privy. Which ended as follows as Kovul asked “So do you support Vinter Raelthorne?” , “No Sir”? said the guard (telling Morrow’s own truth), “Bollock’s!” said Kovul and swung at him with his Axe…missed and said guards man then dived screaming down the open trap door. All chance of sneaking in was over and the party just glared at Kovul, who glared back. Time passed and then alarm bells started to ring and combat broke out.

.

In the ensuing chaos, the party managed to find several prisoners (including Father Dumas and Lord Sunbright), free them and almost escaped without casualties. But were cut off by the guards and the arrival of lots of guns And Van Oberen. Bart was overcome by a group of viscous Skorne paingivers that he ran into and while he didn’t bleed out, he was left behind by his valiant buddies. (”Leave no man behind!” not being part of the parties creed) The rest of the rescue team managed to fight off the wave of Skorne that took down Bart, lost a couple of rescued prisoners and then plunged through the blood grates back into the Sewer to flee into the night.

.

And so, father Dumas is saved, Skorne are in the city and Bart has been captured… Can the party save Corvis or will they call it a day and bugger off to Five Fingers!

After 2 weeks away hunting Alexia and recovering the Witchfire the party were hours out from Corvis when they ran into a the first ships racing North. After watching a few go past the Party eventually hailed a ship and discovered that Corvis had been “invaded” by forces loyal to Vinter Raelthorne!
.
This put the brakes on the idea of sailing in and dumping the Witchfire in Father Dumas’ lap. A quick bit of questioning also discovered that while people were being allowed in and out, all weapons were being confiscated from travellers. With a special focus on swords. Little else needed to be said and the party decided that taking the Witchfire into Corvis was unlikely to be a great idea.
.
As they drifted down stream pondering on this they noted some very deep “singing” coming from the hills on the port bank. Not ones to miss the chance of a wild goose chase, the party docked the boat (smashed into the bank), tied it off (threw the bow line into some bushes) and dashed off into the hills to find out what was going on. After a short trek they found a group of people sitting on a hill top looking down the other side away from them. Uncharacterisucally, the party hailed them “vocally” rather than with steel and bullets, and were waved up to join the folks on the hill top
.
Over the crest an amazing site greeted the party as they watched 30 off massive stone creatures singing and dancing in a rock strewn field below them. A shirt discussion with the folks on the hill top (Students from the University of Corvis) lead the party to understand that these dancing giants were Dolomites. Apparently harmless, brainless giants with a taste for dirt, clay and the occasional magic item… light bulbs went off so fast and bright that steam power was almost declared obsolete and it wasn’t long before Father Kovul (The Dwarf Priest) was trekking down the hill to offer up the Witchfire to the Dolomites.
.
Closer and closer he got, backed up by brave Milskrat (WitlessTrollkin Fighter), until he decided he was close enough, dropped the sword and legged it back up the hill. Milskrat on the other hand decided that punting the sword nearer and nearer was necessary and so he proceeded to move to within 30 foot of the nearest beast punting the Witchfire ever closer, while the party prayed hard (to at least 4 different gods) for the beast to devour the bloody sword… no luck. The sword dropped 10′ from the beast, and was ignored. Lots of questions were asked of the students regarding exactly how powerful a magic item needed to be before a Dolomite would eat it. Milskrat wondered over to the sword, picked it up and noticed the singing had stopped, 30 large angry (can a rock look angry) beasts with huge claws and cavernous mouths had all turned to face the interruption to their mating dance, and Milskrat did the first dumb thing he could think of and burst into song. And a pretty good song it was too, the Dolomites were soon humming and swaying along to Milskrats Trollkin lullaby as he backed carefully away with the Witchfire.
.
As he returned, Father Kovul grabbed the sword, cast Detect Magic and was disturbed to find that the sword did not radoat magic… ah well it seemed like a great idea at the time.
.
To be continued…
